Back on the Treadmill Again

Did anyone else watch the women’s Olympic marathon on Sunday?

With my re-interest in running and the fact that two of the Americans are from Oregon (Kara Goucher & Shalane Flanagan), I made sure to set the DVR for 3am on Sunday morning and watched it about 8 hours later when I finally got up!  Mr. Won’t Run couldn’t imagine how I found it interesting but I really did.

A lot can happen over 26 miles and I loved seeing how the leaders changed throughout the race.  Kara and Shalane were leaders for a long time but ended up finishing 10th and 11th.  I couldn’t admire those runners more, they were amazing.  To run for over two hours straight, are you kidding me?  I’m doing three minutes straight and feeling pretty cocky about it, but two hours??  That’s like running during an entire movie.

Ooh, there’s an idea!  Fill a theater with treadmills for a different kind of movie marathon.  It’ll have to be a real movie that’s actually two hours long though, none of these 90 minuters trying to pass themselves off as movies.

Anyways… watching the marathon may have been dangerous because now I’m having crazy ideas like maybe I could run a marathon.  Someday.  In the far, far, far off future.

Wait, what?  Me?  Run a marathon?  I think I’m losing my mind.

Remember my out-of-the-blue ankle pain?  I’ve been off the running train for two weeks now, and the moment I decide I should call an actual Doctor the pain suddenly goes away.  I gave it a few more days just to be sure but tonight I picked up my C25K training.  I started where I left off, Week 3 Run 1, and I actually did it without too much trouble.  Thankfully the ankle felt fine and I’m really hoping that whatever it was has worked itself out.

While it felt good to be running again, that darn doubt started sneaking in.  Who am I to think I could one day run a marathon?  I can hardly get through these three minutes!  I’d never be able to run 26 miles!  And then I remembered this:

Saw this on Pinterest a while back and I think I finally found the true source: http://spirituallythinking.blogspot.com/2012/01/highlight-reel.html

So let’s break it down…

This C25k training is my behind-the-scenes.

The OLYMPIC MARATHON was definitely their highlight reel.

Keep it in perspective, Sarah!

And here’s something else that may help you keep going:

Found this on Pinterest (http://pinterest.com/pin/70437465036493/) which linked to this site (http://itsfitnessbaby.com/2159/) and another pin linked to this tumblr page (http://thetimeisnow-30lbs.tumblr.com/) (I hate pins from tumblr), not sure where this originated though. If it’s yours please let me know so I can credit you or take it down. Please don’t sue me, I have no money.

So how about it, a marathon next fall?  Maybe just a half…

Thank you Bridget! I have it tucked away in my head so now anytime I start comparing (for any reason) I just think “highlight reel, highlight reel, highlight reel”. Seems to be working for keeping things in perspective :)

Great post! It was so inspire to watch those marathoners pound it out. I can’t even fathom running that pace! As for you doing a marathon…never say never. I used to think I’d do a marathon as soon as hell froze over…now I’m training for one.

Thanks Dara! Oh my goodness, I totally forgot about their pace!! It’s not like everyone can run a marathon in just over two hours, it would probably take me all of the Harry Potters, LOL! I’m thiking that once I have a 5k under my belt I’ll naturally want to progress to longer races, that’s what I’m hoping anyways!

I love your thinking!!! I have those crazy thoughts as well as the doubt that follows them also. But I think that we can accomplish all of it, if we just keep running. So glad to hear your ankle is better. I just started Week 4… Yikes! It was a rough one but felt good when I was done.

Exactly, “just keep running”, and we can totally accomplish it! It has been hard to get back into it after being out for a couple of weeks, I’m actually going to be re-starting week four tomorrow. Hope yours is going well and you’re on week six by now :)

The highlight reel quote is perfect! I get grand ideas about a marathon, but then self doubt creeps in. I did a half marathon a couple years ago, then fully trained for another one and 2 weeks before hurt my knee, so I could run. I am hoping to train for a half next spring, but I am already doubting myself :(

That stinkin’ doubt, it sucks! I saw a great ad for Mizuno recently that said “I used to run with Doubt. Now, she can’t keep up.” I loved that! Wow, you’ve done a half? I’m totally impressed, especially since I haven’t even done a mile all at once yet, LOL! I have already learned that injuries suck though, you want to be out there so bad and something beyond your control is stopping you. I hope you can train again soon!
