What the Friday!

(iPhone image by me on a rare morning out of the office vising a jobsite for work, lovely view of the Fremont Bridge.)

You guys!  Spring is springing!!!  It was sunny and 73 yesterday, and today is supposed to be sunny and 68 with the weekend looking pretty amazing as well.  These are the days most of us Oregonians live for.  I’m loving it and am hoping to get out and soak up the Vitamin D this weekend!

Let’s see, what else happened this week…

Did you hear that Downton Abbey is ending with Season 6?  Noooooooooooooooooooo!  I love that show and just recently got caught up so it’s all fresh in my head and now I hear it’s ending, but there are rumors of a movie or spinoff which would be fun.  Why do all the good ones end too soon?!!  Visiting Highclere Castle is definitely on my vacation wishlist, and you can even stay on the property at London Lodge, although I’d guess it’s booked up through 2045, ha!  I also just discovered that Lady Carnarvon has a blog!!  I subscribed to that in a hot second.  Anyone else think Grantham might show up on lists of baby boy names in the next few years?

Speaking of TV, in the summer of 2012 I developed a major girl crush on Sutton Foster during Bunheads (an Amy Sherman-Palladino gem that also ended way too soon), and she’s in a new series that starts on Tuesday: Younger.  It looks pretty cute and I can’t wait to watch it, even though she won’t be doing any singing and dancing on this show which is basically blasphemy!  I’d love to see her in person doing her Broadway thing someday.

My co-worker’s daughter came into the office this week wearing the cutest pair of sandals that were Birkenstock!  Birkenstocks have never really been on my radar, some people wore them in high school but I was more of the penny-loafer type… with actual pennies in them.  Preppy much?  People who wear Birkenstocks love them though so there must be something to it, right?  This is the Mayari in Toffee and I totally want them!  I think it’s because the crisscross over the toe reminds me of some other sandals I had for about ten years before they fell to pieces and I’ve never found another pair like them.  These aren’t the same at all, but they remind me of my long lost sandal love.

Birkenstock

I’m also loving this video about the Vinyasa Scarf *Rulu from lululemon, it can be worn 10 different ways and the gal who demonstrates it is adorable and I totally want to be her friend.  It’s an interesting scarf concept, although $48 is a little steep for my bargain budget, but if you figure it’s $4.80 per wearable option it might be easier to justify.

And last but not least on this awesome Friday, you should check out this great post from Kristen at Dine and Dish – What I Learned about Happiness on a Princess Cruise.  Admittedly, finding happiness aboard a cruise ship is easier than other places, haha, but I really enjoyed her post and felt like all 8 tips applied to me where I’m at right now.  I’ve been struggling through a bout of depression (thanks Oregon winter) and this was a great reminder of ways to help myself break out of it.  Not that everyone can just choose to snap out of depression, but there are certainly things we can do to help ourselves and if you need a place to start you should definitely read that post!

Weekend plans:  Not sure but I know I need to get out in the sunshine!

What are you up to?  Seriously, I want to know, I have no life so I need ideas. ♥ ♥ ♥

Random Monday Madness #2

IMG_2947.jpg

Aaaaand we’re back at Monday!  They just keep coming.

I guess without Monday you can’t get to Friday, and it’s another day to enjoy life so maybe I need to change my perspective of Mondays.  My Monday brain is still good-for-nothing so let’s get on with the Random Monday Madness!

1. I was originally going to call this Monday series Blog Vomit.

2. I got together with a group of girlfriends from college on Saturday.  I drove down to Salem and we met up at our old hangout, the oh-so-exciting Red Robin (Yummm).  The waiter asked what the special occasion was and we explained it was a girl’s night out.  I think he was a little surprised when our drink orders were just water and soda, ha!  Obviously we get all sorts of crazy on those girl’s nights of ours.

3. Since Thursday I have been washing my face with oil.  Yep, oil.  It’s called the Oil Cleansing Method (OCM) and I’m liking it so far, I’ve already seen an improvement in my dry patches.  It’s not only for dry skin though, it can be great if you have oily skin as well.  It seems counterproductive to put oil on your face when somewhere along the line we have been told that oil is the evil enemy, but our skin actually needs some oil.  Leslie over at Crunchy Betty is my go-to for natural skincare info and she has a great post about oil as a cleanser and oil as a moisturizer.  She also has a great post about honey on your face too!  Leslie finally got an Etsy shop going (which her readers have been begging for!!) and I ordered some of this:

IMG_2947

She has a lot of DIY recipes on her site and explains how you can make your own oil cleanser, I was just feeling too lazy to buy all the different ingredients and thought I’d buy it straight from her to try it out first.  It was a $15.50 very well spent, and she includes her recipe in the purchase so you can make more yourself.  If you’re not a Crunchy Betty fan yet, get on the bandwagon already!

4. When I took Koko for her walk in the frosty wonderland, I put a harness leash on her to try.  It’s totally the wrong size and she’s not impressed so I’ll need to exchange it, but I snapped this pic and you can totally see her top lip chevron mustache!  Or whatever that dark line area is?  I don’t always notice it but there’s no missing it here!  Maybe I should be a good friend and get her some bleaching strips?  And a tweezer for those chin hairs!  I guess pets do start looking like their owners, huh?  Don’t answer that.

5. What do I love about Instagram?  And Twitter too?  You can totally interact with Bloggers you love!  Check out the comments on this Instagram photo.  That’s me educating Shelley from The House of Smiths on the Target clearance markdown schedule.  How fun is that?!!  Commenting on a blog, especially a very popular one, can be a little disappointing because once they get so big not all Bloggers are able to interact with each commenter.  It’s very understandable, and I guess disappointing isn’t the right word, you just don’t feel noticed.  And it’s not like you comment on a blog to get noticed, but you’re commenting because you love something and you want to know that they heard you.  Does that make any sense or is my good-for-nothing brain totally incoherent at this point?  My point is that on IG and Twitter it can turn into a conversation with someone you admire and that’s a lot of fun!  Check out Shelley’s other IG photos too, her girls are just the cutest!

6. If you want to bookmark it, here’s a Target clearance schedule list that has some additional departments listed.  But come on Target, can’t you do women’s clothing, shoes, cosmetics, and jewelry all on the same day instead of making me come to Target three days a week?  Although I guess that’s genius since some people can’t get out of there for less than $100 each visit.  Well played Target!

And there we have it, another episode of blog vomit, thanks for holding my hair back!

Random Monday Madness #1

Monday. Blech.

I don’t know how you feel about Mondays, but they’re not my favorite.  It’s not that I hate my day job or anything, but after two days free to do whatever I want, whenever I want, it’s hard to give up the freedom come Monday morning.

Coffee helps, but my Monday brain is foggy and not good for much of anything, including a stellar blog post.  So I’m starting Monday Madness.  A day to share all the random things I want to; things that don’t need their own post each, but things still worth sharing – fun pins, cool blogs, rants, raves, etc.  You know, that sort of stuff.  We’ll see if I can keep it up all year.

1. Today was a fun mail day!  I ordered the chevron print version of that “home is wherever I’m with you” sign, now I need to find a frame and a spot to put it.  I also got two books:

The Picky Palate Cookbook by Jenny Flake of the food blog Picky-Palate.com,

amazon-picky-palate-cookbook

and Food Photography for Bloggers by Matt Armendariz.

focus-on-food-photography-for-bloggers-amazon

I’m not a food blogger but I do take food photos on occasion and my photo skills need some major help.  While looking a these two books I realized that Matt Armendariz did the food photography for The Picky Palate Cookbook.  I guess he knows what he’s talking about!

2. Koko went to the vet on Saturday for her first teeth cleaning.  I don’t like that they put her under for the procedure but I guess I get it.  Animals probably aren’t too keen on opening wide for plaque scraping.  I dropped her off at 7-freaking-am and didn’t pick her up until after 4pm.  She was definitely a little dazed.  She was still a little off all day Sunday and puked a couple of times (fun!) but by about 9pm she was eating again and looking a littler perkier.  Here she is in a dazed moment, no interest in toys at all:

3. Getting through Mondays are hard enough, but then trying to figure out what to make for dinner is the last thing I want to do.  I need to get into meal planning and be better organized about getting decent meals on the table.  Tonight I came up with this tasty combo:

will-run-for-pasta-butternut-sage

4. I’m watching Scarface right now because I’m too lazy to get up and find the remote control that changes the channel. The funny thing though… I have three remotes next to me. None of them change the channel.

And that’s all I have for today.  This Monday apparently took it out of me, only four random things to share.

Time for bed.

You want thingamabobs?

IMG_1664.jpg

I’ve got 20!

But who cares? No big deal. I want mooooooore!

Okay, I’m back from junior high, sorry!

Let’s catch up shall we?

* * * * * * * * * *

1. The other day, Mr. Won’t Run asked me why I never wear dresses – I think he’s trying to tell me something. It’s just so hard when you don’t *have* to dress up for work. I know, I know… I should put in the extra effort for myself (or for the Mr.), but myself doesn’t feel like a fancy dress-for-no-reason kind of person. Plus, when I do wear a dress I apparently double in size, check this out, I seriously look like I’m ready to give birth:

IMG_1664

Anyone want an Old Navy maxi dress circa 2011?  Hey, if Pioneer Woman can give her clothes away on the internet why not me?  I love the pattern and colors so I hate that it’s not so flattering, maybe when I learn to sew I can re-fashion it into a skirt or something?

2. This past weekend I had two races planned and I wound up 0 for 2.  The Color Run was on Saturday and I was going to walk it with a work friend but it ended up being a very busy weekend for her as she was planning her daughter’s fifth birthday party.  I actually talked her out of doing it since she really didn’t have the time and I knew it would just add more stress, so we’ll hopefully be coloring it up next year.  Then I woke up on Sunday with awful cramps (TMI for the blog?) so I decided to skip the 5k I was going to run and I spent the next two days in the fetal position with my heating pad.  Not to worry though, the Red Faced Runners have a new challenge out and I’m looking for a race to do the weekend of November 17th.  Who wants to join me?

3. On Friday we had dinner at Ox and it was amazing!  Drinks – my tall pink one was homemade hibiscus soda, and Mr. Won’t Run had a Shipwreck which contained Bourbon, Rum, Lime, Mint, and Angostura Bitters.  Their version of clam chowder was so rich and out of this world with marrow bone and jalapenos.  One of our side dishes was the “Heirloom hominy, braised pork belly, cilantro, chilies, olive oil-fried duck egg”, and the Mr. had a steakfor dinner.

IMG_2009

I had the Chorizo for dinner, and we also tried an empanada (grilled corn, poblano chili, potato, and fontina), the chilled seafood sampler which contained five different dishes (“Oregon bay shrimp ceviche, salmon gravlax & halibut tartare, mussel poke, scallop salad “dynamite,” Dungeness crab cocktail”), and the risotto (summer squash, parmigiano reggiano, mascarpone, herb butter).  Oh yeah, and there was bread with homemade chimichurri, and we had dessert as well – I had the torte (“warm hazelnut brown butter torte, honey-chamomile ice cream, honeycomb candy) and he had the magic (“roasted peach-blackberry sorbet, bittersweet chocolate magic shell, local summer fruits”).

Yeah, we kind of do this thing where we order a TON of stuff at a new place because it all looks so darn good.  Ox did not disappoint!

4. Attending a blog conference is on my 35 Things list but those suckers can be super pricey so I was thrilled to find out about Online Blog Con!  It’s Oct 22-24, only $15, and all online so I won’t have to miss my day job – shoot!  I’m still trying to get to a face-to-face blog conference within the next year but this one was impossible to pass up.

5. Speaking of blogging, I’ve also discovered Pacific Northwest Bloggers and Portland Bloggers. It’s so fun finding local bloggers and they even have meet-ups for networking and learning. I’m going to a meet-up in October and November which is so far out of my comfort zone! I’m definitely more of a wallflower, a behind-the-scenes type of girl, but this will be good for me, and everyone I have interacted with so far has been so nice and encouraging. I think it’s going to be great.

6. I am absolutely a Fall girl and my Susan Branch 2012 calendar is speaking loudly to me this month, I thought this George Eliot quote was beautiful… delicious autumn… my soul is wedded to it…

7. I’m pretty sure Mr. Won’t Run speaks the Love Language of gift giving since he spoiled me rotten the other night. We went to the mall to get him some work clothes and I ended the evening with a new sweater from Express (but it’s not a *sweater* sweater because I have too many of those, this is more of a “throw” as the Mr. described it… a loose, flowy cardigan type… different than the typical chunky cable-knit sweater type of sweater). I couldn’t even tell you the last time I was in an Express store, for some reason I’ve been thinking it was way too young for me but I was wrong and I’ll definitely be checking it out again. I’m not sure it will take the place of LOFT in my life but we’ll see. And if that wasn’t enough, the Mr. got me the sunglasses I have been drooling over for months now – Drizzle by Oakley, a rather appropriate name for them since I’ll be wearing them in Oregon, don’t you think? My track record with sunglasses isn’t the greatest so this may be the one an only time he ever buys me a pair. My theory is that since they’re so nice I’ll take better care of them and not scratch them up or lose them… we’ll see how that goes.

8. I’m almost done reading Quitter and highly recommend it.  It’s not what I expected at all but that’s a good thing.  As I explained on Instagram, it’s helping me realize that my day job is a stepping stone and not a cement block that has been tied to my ankles and tossed over a pier. Goodness, that makes it sound like I hate my job which isn’t really the case, it’s a good job with good people, just not my passion, you know? Haven’t quite figured out that whole life’s passion thing yet.

quitter

9. I used the PicFrame app to create the picture above as part of Fat Mum Slim’s monthly photo-a-day challenge.  The topic for 10/4 is “what you read”. There are all sorts of photo-a-day challenges out there but I like hers because it’s not specific to one topic for the whole month.  If you’re looking for a reason to take more pictures and work your creative brain you should check it out!

10. I finally tracked down an Ava Anderson Non-Toxic rep nearby and we met up for coffee tonight! Her name is Jessica and she is a super nice gal who sells a super great product!  If you’re looking for safe, non-toxic skincare, make-up, sunscreen, cleaning products, etc., you should totally check out AANT.  Funny story – I was actually signed up with AANT a few years ago, I was a “founding consultant”, #2400, and I was the first one in Oregon.  That is basically a direct sales dream come true but I decided the home-party thing wasn’t for me, I just don’t have the personality to make it work.  It’s an amazing story though… a 15 year old who was appalled to learn about the toxic ingredients in skincare products so she started her own company. I ordered some shampoo, conditioner, and styling cream and can’t wait to try them out.  I can also tell you from past experience that the lip scrub and the toner are awesome!

* * * * * * * * * *

So there you have it, some of the stuff I’ve been up to lately.  Have you figured out yet that I can be kind of wordy… or “verbose” as the Mr. would say.

Twitter has been a difficult adjustment.
