The Original {Portland, OR}

A couple weekends ago, Mr. Won’t Run and I had planned to do brunch at The Original“the downtown destination for all-day Portland dining” – but we both woke up not feeling well and ended up postponing to a Monday date night instead.

I had just learned of The Original while at the Portland Bloggers Holiday Mingle event, and I knew I wanted to try them out for a meal.  It’s actually my goal to try ALL the great restaurants that were at the Holiday Mingle, so lucky you, lots more restaurant reviews to look forward to!

As their Twitter describes, The Original “serves up playful variations on the classic standards”.  Fun comfort food.

We started with drinks, of course.

Lardo – East Side {Portland, OR}

We have a constantly growing list of places we want to eat in Portland, and one of the recent additions to that list was Lardo.  We had both heard of it, and recently it seemed that a ton of people on Instagram were posting about it, so we went last weekend and checked it out.

It. Was. Delicious.

We went to their East Side location on Hawthorne Blvd and parked on this lovely tree-lined street a block over.  Portland sure knows how to do Fall.

You know you’re at Lardo by the fun PIG OUT sign, as well as the pig painted on the wall showing what’s what.  I cropped out the people, but had to keep the hipster knit cap.

We were there on a Sunday and it was pretty busy and I have a feeling it always is.  The line was out the door when we arrived but it moved pretty quickly.  They gave us our number – adorably stamped on a wooden spoon – and we sat at the bar under the PIG OUT sign.

By the way, it smelled like Rosemary in here and I wanted to move right in.

We have a problem when we try new places.  It’s called gluttony.

We like to order practically one of everything because it all looks so good.  Somehow, sitting under the PIG OUT sign gave us permission and it wasn’t quite so embarrassing when our plates barely fit on the table.  After all, we were only doing what the sign told us to do.

Mr. Won’t Run started with the Chile Verde con Jamon and it was pretty tasty.  At first we thought it might be too salty, but it grew on us with each bite.  It was served with a dollop of sour cream, was sweeter than expected, and not too spicy.  He was also a big fan of the Cock ‘n Bull Ginger Beer.

After seeing them on Instagram I knew I wanted to try the Dirty Fries and Kale Caesar.  I have two words to sum up each of those items, and they both include “fried”.

Dirty Fries = fried herbs.  Fried sage and rosemary.  I want to put that on everything.
(french fries with pork scraps, marinated peppers, fried herbs and parmesan)

Kale Caesar = fried lemon.  Had never heard of friend lemon, now it’s all I want.
(chopped kale with fried lemon, toasted pine nuts, ricotta salata, and cucumber)

For sandwiches, I ordered the Pork Meatball Banh Mi with sriracha mayo, pickled vegetables, and cilantro:

Mr. Won’t Run ordered the Pork Belly Gyro with feta, cucumber, tzatziki, and tomato:

We. Were. Stuffed.

We both enjoyed the food and there are so many delicious sounding options that we will definitely be back to try more!  Especially since there is a second location, we’ll have to try that one just to compare, right?  #Research
